What are the espardenyes?

There is no record of the time when this shoe was first used. There are writings from 1910 in which the archduke Luis Salvador de Austria, on one of his trips to Ibiza, already used them.

It is a shoe that was only used in Ibiza, in any of the other islands, a peculiarity that has made them known as typical Ibizan espardenyes.

The espardenya of morret de pitra and sole of esparto is the one that the women used to wear on certain dates and to go to mass.

The espardenya openwork pitra and esparto sole is what women normally used for field work and to dress daily.

The espardenyes open bushes with soles of esparto were of pitra and, as it happened with those of morret of woman, they only put in dates very indicated for the works of the field.
